The first thing before you cook or bake is to know what you will need. So, before you know the steps on how to make chocolate cake at home, here is the list of ingredients that you will have to pick up from the grocery store. Cooking spray, 1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder – it can be either natural or Dutch-process, 2 and a half cups of all-purpose flour, 2 cups of sugar, 1 and a half teaspoons of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of the best baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt to attain the bliss point, 3 whole eggs, 3/4 cup of any vegetable oil, half cup of sour cream and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

Let’s Begin!

You will need to initially preheat the oven to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In the meanwhile, you can start coating two nine-inch-round (or any shape of your choice) cake pans with the cooking spray. Then line the bottoms of the pan with baking parchment paper.

Next, begin whisking the cocoa powder with 1 and a half cups of boiling water in a medium-sized bowl until it turns out smooth. Now set this mixture aside. Start whisking the sugar, flour, baking soda, salt and baking powder in a large sized bowl, till they form a mixture. Add three eggs, vanilla, vegetable oil and sour cream and beat them with a mixer. Do it in medium speed until it turns into a smooth mixture for about a minute. Then reduce the mixture speed till the cocoa mixture is a fine flowing paste.

Evenly divide the batter between the prepared pans. Don’t forget to tap them against the counter before putting them into the oven. Bake them for at least 30-40 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Once this is done, transfer the pans to the racks and let them cool for about 10 minutes. After running a knife carefully around the edge of both the pans, turn the cakes and let them cool completely. After you remove the parchment, trim and decorate your cake!
